Soligea journey into history
Only a few kilometers from the Isthmus of Corinth you meet the Baths of Oraia Eleni, Galataki, Almiri, Ryto, Sofiko, villages which belong to the wider area of ancient " Soligeia " and compose a unique natural landscape that combines all natural beauty that combines shades of green, brown and gray of olive groves, pine trees, shrubs and rocks but also the blue of the sea and the sky.

Near the present village of Galataki, it is believed that there was the ancient village "Soligeia" (the current name of the wider area is now Soligeia) built on the "Soligeio Hill". According to Thucydides, the historic descent of the Dorians took place from him, who, after a battle with the Aeolian Corinthians, occupied Corinth. The hill itself became the scene of a stubborn battle between the Athenians and the Corinthians in 425 BC. during the Peloponnesian War.

In 1981 it was the turn of Nikolaos Markellos' children - Dimitris and Panagiotis - to continue the tradition. For more than thirty years they have been constantly investing in the acquisition of new olive groves and in the modernization of our mill.

A legacy of four generations

The olive tree is a tree symbol for the history and culture of our country. Several decades ago it started to become part of our family history.

The 1932 was the year that the first member of our family, Dimitris Marcellus, dealt first with the cultivation of olives and olive oil.

In 1948 he was succeeded by his son Nikolaos Markellos who established and expanded the family business setting a solid foundation and new goals for the future.

Our passion for olive oil creates the vision

The knowledge and experience gained by family members all these years combined with our love and passion for olive oil compose our vision for it. This vision is the legacy that each generation leaves to its next.

The transition from the third to the fourth generation was combined with the complete building and mechanical equipment of the company's olive oil production unit. At the same time we invested in the acquisition of new olive groves. In addition, that year was a turning point for us because we presented for the first time the Soligea packaged product line .

The history of olive oil

The history of olive cultivation (olea europaea) is lost in the depths of the centuries. The olive, which prevailed as a symbol of peace, is believed to have appeared in the Mediterranean basin around the 8th millennium BC. There are researches that trace the origin of the olive tree in the eastern Mediterranean, but the most probable version is that it comes from Greece.

In addition to food, olive oil was used in sacred ceremonies, in medicines, as a fuel for lamps, in the production of soaps and skin care products. The Minoans had adopted the use of olive oil in all their religious ceremonies.
Gradually olive oil became the primary product of the Minoan civilization, which is believed to have been a symbol of wealth. Olive oil was a product of various uses in Mycenaean Greece (1600-1100 BC) and was the main export product of the time.
