Mandwinery was born from the meeting of the young brothers and entrepreneurs Michela and Vito Manduano with the oenologist Giuseppe Colopi.

The company mission is to create wines that represent the winemaking history and potential of our territory, Puglia, but with an attentive eye towards innovation.

Vito Manduano

Founder

I certainly inherited my passion for wine from my paternal grandfather. It was his tradition to make wine from the grapes of local vineyards belonging to some of his family farmers and the harvest thus became a family event that brought everyone together.

I remember the scent of the intensely colored must, which after fermentation was transformed into wine, I remember the joy of the days dedicated to decanting in the ladies, where it was an opportunity for my beloved grandmother to prepare the adorable hot focaccia to delight the palates of us grandchildren and children.

I inherited the interest in agriculture from my mother…his father was the owner of a large farm planted exclusively with vineyards, who when he reached retirement age decided to assign the different vineyards to each of his children. My mother inherited a plot of vines of black grapes, however at a particular moment in my life and that of my sister Michela. I was just 13 at the time and like any teenager at that age I certainly wasn't able to carry on those lands, much less my mother and for this reason I reluctantly convinced her to sell that plot. At the same time I promised myself that one day with that proceeds I would have bought others of even greater extensions and so it was!

Today we are the owners of a farm of about 35 hectares. Our first wine, the ottantadì was born from the promise made by myself 20 years ago, combined with the one made by our oenologist and friend, Giuseppe Colopi.
Ottantadì: “one wine, one promise” or rather, two!

Time has no time, you take it or it goes away.. to our wine instead, we dedicate all the time it takes to get far, over the years and in the goals.

The first thought that comes to me when I think of my family is the set of values that have been passed on to me. I owe everything to my grandparents, they taught me respect for others and the memories I have of them are many.. they were very close to each other, no one ever did anything without the other. My grandparents' house was always full of people, because they breathed authenticity and purity of mind. I can say with extreme certainty that if my brother and I are what we are today, it is thanks to their example. They have transmitted to us values that today are difficult to find in people. The memories associated with them, in this moment of our lives, resurface more than ever.

We are approaching the world of wine, certainly different from our work, but it is precisely from them that this passion of ours starts. At the grandparents' house there was never a shortage of good wine, neither at the table nor on the shelves as a reserve, together with milk and flour: it was considered as important as a basic necessity. My grandfather devoted all of himself to that wine, until the very end, when he was very old and tired and did it in secret, away from the eyes of his children and grandchildren who feared he would get too tired. Who forgets the smell of wine. Today when I taste wine, the same memory of me as a child always resurfaces, watching the procedures to create that magic in amazement.

Grandfather would be proud of our new experience animated by true passion, the same one he passed on to my brother Vito and me in facing life: "A life without passion would be a flat life".
I remember that my grandfather, to reciprocate a gesture received, proudly donated his wine, the fruit of passion and dedication.

Today, as he taught me, I express the same pride in presenting our Ottantadì to you.

Joseph Colopi

Co-Founder & Winemaker

I consider myself a very lucky person, as I do a profession that I love, passion is the driving force of my knowledge. Continuous training is important, also because there is still so much to discover in the world of wine. After about 25 years of profession, after making wine from international vines, studying the evolution of wine, I began to nurture a passion and interest in native vines of my territory, Puglia. I have understood through experience that certain wines can only be made by a native, as a connoisseur of that common language.

You need to have great knowledge of the climate, culture, exchange of views with farmers, sometimes even speaking my beloved dialect, to be honest the TERROIR and also the love for my land, the indelible memories and scents of my childhood.

The autochthonous vine that I adore is Uva di Troia. We are not yet able to understand how it got to us, it was certainly brought by the Greeks during the colonization of our lands, in what was called Magna Graecia. The origins are only hypotheses and the one I would have most wanted to be true is the myth of Diomedes, a great Greek warrior and hero, who is said to have sailed the Adriatic Sea after the Trojan War and had brought with him, as a souvenir, vine shoots that planted on the banks of the Ofanto gave rise to the Uva di Troia.

Today with ottantadì we continue to tell the story, our story.
